Moving house, downsizing or moving in with family: how to keep the same home physio in Sydney

For families-clients-and-care-managers

Short answer: In most cases a move within Sydney Metro does not have to mean starting again with a new physio. Because Alera Healthcare is a mobile service, the same physiotherapist or exercise physiologist can usually keep visiting at the new address, whether that is a smaller home, a retirement village unit or a family member's place. Let us know the new address and moving date early, and we will plan a visit soon after the move to check how the person is managing in the new space. Same physio wherever possible. Alera has provided in-home physiotherapy and exercise physiology across Sydney Metro since 2004, including as an associated provider for clients on Support at Home.

Why a move is a good time to keep the same physio

Moving is one of the biggest changes later in life. New steps, a different shower, unfamiliar floors and a new route to the kitchen at night all ask the body to adapt at once. A physio who already knows the person can compare how they move in the new home with how they moved before, rather than starting from a blank page. Our post on why the same physio matters explains how a consistent baseline helps progress be measured fairly.

It also takes one worry off the list. A familiar face at the door can make the first weeks in a new place feel more settled for the client and for the family.

Common moves we help with

Downsizing to a smaller home or unit

A smaller place can be easier to manage, but it often brings new challenges such as lift access, tighter bathrooms or a different set of front steps. Your physio can practise the new routes with you and adjust the home program to fit the space.

Moving into a retirement village

Village units are often designed with access in mind, but each layout is different. The therapist can look at getting in and out of the unit, the walk to shared areas and anything the person wants to get back to, such as the village gym, garden or social events.

Moving in with family

When a parent moves in with a son or daughter, the household changes for everyone. Visits can be booked when family members are home, including Saturdays, so they can see the program and learn how to help without doing too much. Our guide for family carers has more on supporting someone at home.

What to do before moving day

  • Tell us early. Share the new address and moving date by phone or email so we can confirm the therapist can continue visiting there.
  • Arrange a visit soon after the move. A first visit in the new home is a chance to walk through the space together and update the home program.
  • Note anything new. Stairs, a step into the shower, a longer hallway or a different bed height are all worth mentioning.
  • Keep the routine going. If there is a gap during the move, it is fine. Our guide to restarting home physio after a break explains how to ease back in.

If the client is on Support at Home

Alera is not a registered Support at Home provider. We work as an associated provider alongside the client's registered provider. If the client keeps the same registered provider after the move, let the care manager at your registered provider know the new address so visits can continue as authorised. If the registered provider or care manager changes as part of the move, see what happens to home physio when the care manager changes.

Private clients and DVA

Private clients and families can enquire directly about continuing visits at a new address. DVA clients are welcome to ask about eligibility on enquiry. We do not offer occupational therapy or NDIS services.

FAQ

Can I keep the same physio if I move house in Sydney?

In most cases, yes. Alera Healthcare visits clients at home across Sydney Metro, so the same physio or EP can usually keep visiting at the new address. Same physio wherever possible. Let us know the new suburb so we can confirm. If the move is outside Sydney Metro, we can talk through options on enquiry.

Should I have a physio visit straight after moving?

A visit in the first week or two after a move is a good idea. The therapist can check how the person manages the new steps, bathroom and routes around the home, and update the home program to suit.

Do you visit retirement villages?

Many retirement village units are private homes, so in-home visits can often continue there. Let us know the village and suburb when you enquire so we can confirm.

What happens to Support at Home physio when a client moves?

If the client keeps the same registered provider, the care manager updates the address and visits can continue as authorised. Alera works as an associated provider alongside the registered provider, so the client keeps their current provider and care manager.

Who can enquire about continuing home physio after a move?

Clients, families and care managers at registered providers can all enquire. DVA clients can ask about eligibility on enquiry. We do not offer occupational therapy or NDIS services.
