Physio at home / Stroke rehabilitation
Stroke rehabilitation physiotherapy at home in Sydney
After a stroke, getting out to a clinic can undo the energy the day needs. Once home-based physiotherapy is medically appropriate, a physiotherapist can practise walking, transfers, and balance with you where you live.
What home physiotherapy can help with
This is community physiotherapy, not hospital care. Visits can include walking, transfers, balance, and arm or leg practice that fits the home. Plans are individual. We do not promise a recovery speed or a full return of function.
Who this is for
Adults living at home or in aged care after a stroke, and families arranging therapy once inpatient rehabilitation has finished.
If this is an emergency
If you think someone is having a stroke, call 000. This page is for planned physiotherapy after that emergency has passed.
What happens on a visit
The physiotherapist assesses you in the living environment and agrees goals with you, and with family where that helps. Wherever possible, the same physiotherapist continues.
Funding
If you are on Support at Home, your registered provider holds the funding. Alera delivers physiotherapy as an associated provider when that care is arranged. DVA, where eligible, and private payment are confirmed on the planning call.
Read funding for home physio. Exercise physiology can come later for graded fitness, when it is clinically suitable. How to choose a starting point is in physio first, then exercise physiology.
Where to go next
The parent service is physiotherapy at home. If balance is the ongoing worry, read falls prevention at home. Parkinson's disease has a separate guide, Parkinson's physiotherapy and exercise at home. Care managers can refer a client. Coverage is listed on Sydney Metro home visits.
